New Year's Day

Description: The start of the annual Gregorian calendar.

The Julian (lunar) Calendar - named after Julius Caesar after whom the month of July was named in 46 BC - was replaced by the Gregorian (solar) Calendar, named after its champion, Pope Gregory (Latin: Gregorius), who emphasised the birth year of Christ as the start of the year count.

The Gregorian Calendar was first introduced in 1582 in some European countries. However, many countries used the Julian Calendar much longer. Turkey was the last country to officially switch to the new system on 1 January 1927.
