13th General Assembly of the UPCSA
14 Jul : 17:52  by Clerk
The 13th General Assembly of the UPCSA (GA) was held on 7 to 13 July 2018 at eMseni Christian Centre, Benoni. Our Presbytery was represented by the full complement of its appointed Commissioners: the Reverends Thembisa Galela-Thema, Bongani Mshumpela, Mziwonke Goba and Roger Tem, and Elders Herman Booysen, Lizzy Weerwal, Lerato Galeboe and Moremi Likhethe.

It was an exhausting week during which some direction-changing decisions were made, particularly the long-awaited merging of the current eight church associations into four.

As is already known, the Moderator of GA for 2018 to 2020 is the Rev Peter Langerman. The Moderator Designate for 2020 to 2022, elected at this GA, is the Rev Sipho Mtetwa, a remarkable person greatly loved and appreciated by many.

The presence of our own Presbytery will be felt for the next two years in the committees of GA by the presence of the following members:

Stewardship: The Rev Malose Thema (convenor) & the Rev Thembisa Galela-Thema;
Ministry: The Rev John Gordon;
AARP/Court: The Rev John Gordon & Elder Herman Booysen (both alternates);
Communications: The Rev Jaques Murphy;
Manual of Faith & Order: The Rev John Gordon & Elder Herman Booysen;
Church Doctrine: Elder Herman Booysen.

Last, but not least, GA approved the overture to change the name of the Presbytery of the Free State to the Presbytery of the Trans-Xhariep. By this change, the Presbytery has finally been freed of its geo-political branding and can therefore embrace the fact that it is the only Presbytery in the UPCSA that straddles the boundaries of three South African provinces.
